I made another 'hole' in the mount to move the camera forwards about 1cm - this works out PERFECTLY for the nodal point if a row is taken at 26deg down and 26deg up. This means 2 rows of photo's plus zenith, etc. It's more around the 2 rows that aren't working. I spent a fair time last night setting it up right, the nodal point is perfect. They are very cheap and have awful reviews on the various websites but I am unlikely ever to find enough money to buy a good one.Has anybody had any experience with one of these or similar?With patience and practice what sort of results could I expect?

With those sort of telephoto lenses, you may use them once, and that is it. Because they are so big, cumbersome, crappy, and slow, you will find little to no use of them. With just the largeness of them, you'll find it an annoyance to shoot with them.
