Book recommendation for first DSLR (Canon 40D)?
I have just purchased a Canon 40D DSLR, having previously had an Olympus C-7070 compact. I pretty much just used my compact as a point and click camera and did not learn about manual settings so I would say I am an absolute beginner.
A company called The Magic Lantern offers an instructional DVD for your camera. Circuit City may have it or you can check eBay and Amazon.

I would suggest the Magic Lantern Books. they make guides for specific cameras that are basically idiot proof. they also make dvd's so you can actually watch what they do and follow along. very helpful.
The kind of camera for me...?
I currently have two Olympus cameras. One is a small FE-340, and the other is a pretty big (very heavy) C-7070. The FE-340 is great for keeping in your purse to take photos if you see something nice. The C-7070 I didn't really like though.
Canon xsi is worth considering. I have one, and its actually a very good camera for the price $640 with kit lens. That way you would be able to put the extra money towards extra lenses and accessories. More info:
